The world wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for constant change which makes evolutionary paths go further on their quest of progress. Progress is materialized in all shapes and sizes and now Apple and Samsung want to make us forget about classic SIM cards by offering an alternative to that: the e-SIM.
Both tech giants are preparing a new SIM standard set to make it easier for consumers to switch between mobile carriers. There is one more step to be taken in this direction, namely an announcement made by The Groupe Speciale Mobile Association. The new SIM standard will be known as the embedded SIM.
First and foremost, Apple and Samsung will use the new technology on their own handsets to ultimately allow consumers to switch mobile carriers without having to buy or activate a new SIM card. The change is welcomed, as it will indeed save a decent amount of hassle whenever one intends switching from one mobile service carrier to another.
The new technology is expected to launch no earlier than next summer. This is a follow-up for Apple, as the company has previously tried the new strategy ever since October 2014. Back then, Apple launched a new generation of tablets which ship with a new SIM card standard known as the Apple SIM. This device allows users to intuitively switch their limited duration mobile data plans between Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, GigSky and EE.
We don’t know yet whether the update will be available for customers outside the US but hopefully news will reveal that for us. However, the technical specifications related to the new release are still undergoing final stages of trial so it will be at least a year before any devices supporting the electronic SIM reach the markets in the US or, more optimistically, worldwide.
Management of connections has already been improved with an embedded SIM standard launched in the machine to machine market, where physical SIM cards may not easily be changed in devices such as utility meters, assisted living systems or traffic lights.
Technology breaks the boundaries of connections and unveils innovative ways to manage our devices. The e-SIM is the future of boundless connectivity, offering us the freedom to choose and switch between any mobile carrier we fancy at a time. The new improvement will nevertheless strengthen competition in the mobile carriers market, as all strong players will have to build strong strategies in order to retain their pool of customers.
