Last week, a group of workers was doing their job on a construction site in Thornton, Colorado. As they were digging, they suddenly couldn’t go on, as there was an obstruction in the ground which stopped them. After a close expert analysis, this obstruction turned out to be the fossil of a triceratops. This led to the delight of the scientists, who are very happy of the discovery.
A mysterious obstruction prevented the workers from digging
The workers were preparing the land for the construction of a new police station and fire department. Suddenly, they could no longer perform their digging, as something hidden in the ground prevented them from going on. After a short investigation, one of the workers suggested the thing might be a fossil. Therefore, they called for experts from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
The first to arrive was the curator of dinosaurs, Joe Sertich. He reached the site on Monday and, as soon as he cast his eyes on the workers’ discovery, he knew it was something big.
“My heart was racing. I realized it was a pretty important dinosaur find.”
The fossil belonged to a triceratops
After studying the fossil, he decided it might contain a fragment of skull and skeleton belonging to a triceratops. This should probably one of the three triceratops remains found in the Rocky Mountains. Most skulls found in this area of the mountains, called the Front Range, were between 10,000 and 12,000 years old.
However, this fossil looks much older. Sertich thinks the dinosaur lay hidden in the ground for about 66 million years. More fossils might be lying hidden in the proximity, so the work on the construction site has been halted until the area undergoes close investigation.
Most of the time, people come across fossils, but they are unable to recognize what they are. Now, it was a really lucky situation. A triceratops skull is a big discovery to make, and it can unearth many mysteries regarding their evolution as one of the last species of dinosaurs to live on Earth.
