The Russia-Turkey Conflict Grows Stronger
The Russia-Turkey conflict grows stronger with each passing day and Russian authorities declared this Thursday that they are waiting for Turkey to give an understandable explanation as to why they shot down the plane. Turkey, on the other hand, dismissed Russia’s accusations, deeming them “unfitting” and even emotional. On top of everything, Tayyip Erdogan went so far as to claim that Russia should be the one apologizing for this unfortunate incident, and not Turkey.
The main issue is that one of the countries is definitely lying. We do not yet know who is doing it is rather safe to assume that this situation will not have a happy ending. Some have even speculated that one of the countries is “trolling” the other, but diplomacy is not at all a “trolling subject”. Two people lost their lives in this incident and there is no time for useless jokes.
This takedown is by far one of the worst incidents that could have happened given the circumstances the world is facing right now. Obama barely managed to establish some good terms with Putin and he seemed 100% willing to cooperate, but the entire plane situation has generated heated discussions in between NATO and Russia, while establishing the fight against terrorism as a lesser priority, which should not happen.
While both countries were advised by the rest of the world to keep tensions to a minimum, Russia intends to hit Turkey’s economy effective immediately. Join investments were targeted and food imports are looking as though they will be restricted for an indefinite period of time. But it would be easy of these were the only restrictions that Russia had in mind.
Alexei Ulyukayev, Rusia’s Economy Minister, wants to stop all flights going to and coming from Turkey, cancelled any preparations that were required for the joint free trade zone and has put important projects between Russia and Turkey to rest. And when you would think that matters could not get any worse, Russia obviously stopped any kind of cooperation with the Turkish army.
The only mystery that can now solve the puzzle is to find out who is lying about the shoot-down. Russia claims that it never left Syrian air space. But Turkey claims that numerous warnings were given to the plane before it was shot down and Turkey also has proof of that. Until authorities get to the bottom of the investigation, we can only say that the Russia-Turkey conflict grows stronger.
